Screening: Road to Nationhood: Journey to Independence

Road to Nationhood is a 2-part historical documentary film that traces Malaya’s journey to gain independence and the formation of Malaysia which features unseen archive and footage from the past, relived through advanced and cutting edge visual effects (VFX). The documentary’s main focus - to account untold stories of the founding fathers such as Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Tun V.T. Sambanthan and Mr. Lee Kuan Yew as told by close associates, family and friends. The film chronicles the period from 1941 to 1957.

The Road to Nationhood documentary will feature personal and political perspectives of the struggles and oppositions to the Malaysia merger. It is inspired by the rich historical contents and the stories derived from them in New Straits Times Press Group Publications’ book of the same title. The documentary will also feature the voices of Tunku Khadijah Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Tan Sri Tengku Razeleigh, Tan Siok Choo, Zainah Anwar and many more.


Q&A with the filmmaker: Yazid brings 22 years of filmmaking experience to Rack Focus Films. He cut his teeth at his fathers production company from the tender age of 9, before his feet could even touch the editing room floor. After 10 years of editing, directing and camera experience Yazid decided to spread his wings and moved to KL to pursue his dream of becoming a filmmaker. In 2004, Yazid directed and edited his first documentary entitled, ‘Are we doing enough?’ The experience of directing this award-winning film was a turning point in his life. Documentary was his true passion. He then went on to direct documentaries for Discovery Channel, Asian Food Channel, The Crime and Investigation Channel and other Asian based broadcasters. He has produced and directed over 20 hours of documentaries and currently working on his first feature documentary about the Black Hawk Down incident.
